[...] There is no doubt that Digg and Reddit and similar sites drive massive amounts of traffic, as Search Engine Journal points out - and SEOmoz also notes the benefits of what it calls a “linkbait” strategy. But is that traffic actually worth something over the long term? It might be nice to brag about, but it’s not always something to build a business around.
[...] Now stop imagining - this stuff is real. I noted in an earlier post, that in spite of being a Google fanboi, I only see pure “click-thru” earnings decline over time for everyone. This is based on my own theory, as well as general consensus, that the more tech-savvy your audience is, the less likely they are of clicking on Adsense (or other PPC) ads, be it on Google’s search pages or on third-party web sites.
Scoreboard,

I agree that you get a back-link from Digg, but that lone back-link won't really help your SERP ranking much, as that Digg-page from which you got the link doesn't have any PageRank, and almost never gets any, because not many other are linking to that page on Digg (at least not long term).

I wasn't trying to say Digg-traffic doesn't have its benefits. I was just saying traffic from Digg and other such sites cannot be monetized as easily as people think it can be.

When more people realize there isn't much money to be made from gaming Digg, the spammers will go away, on to their next get-rich-quick scheme.

What you don't get in immediate earnings you get back in links. And those links should boost your organic traffic, which should boost your earnings, rinse, and repeat.

I totally agree, and in addition to the points you mention, I am getting pretty tired of sites, articles, etc. made especially for digg, they usually are of no value whatsoever.

Google AdSense is a wonderful idea on paper, but where it fails is most users trying to effectively use it and make "10k" a month and not even understand the process.

To make money for your site, content is required (i learned the hard way) and content will be what brings users into your site. Targetted users towards your topics is what you need for a successful site, not just a digg spike of users clicking on your link.
