To Follow Or Not To Follow

Posted by Ravi Jayagopal on October 27, 2008

If you wish to follow me on Twitter, then I’ll be honored that you chose to do so. I’ll even send you a personal “thank you” note :-)

But if you follow me expecting me to follow you back, that’s probably not going to happen.

Many high-profile Twits (or Twitter’ers) do the Follow-Me-And-I’ll-Follow-You bit.

That’s as pathetic as “sign up for my newsletter, and I’ll sign up for yours”.

If you want to measure the true worth of your brand, and the true power of your tribe, then follow only those who you find interesting, and “stop” following every one else.

Then see how many followers you are left with.

Those are the only ones that count.

Stop making follower-count a pi$$ing contest and make some meaning for your tribe. The followers will automatically follow (in more ways than one).

Why Launch On The Saturday Of A Long Weekend?

Posted by Ravi Jayagopal on October 12, 2008

I launched my newest product (DAP) last night.

So why did I decide to launch it on a Saturday
evening, right in the middle of a long weekend
(at least for most folks here in the US)?

My first motivation for this was one of Seth’s
posts about launches.

“it doesn’t matter much how many elephants you start with. In other words, big launches don’t necessarily scale. What matters is how fertile your elephants are (number of babies per generation) and how long they live. If Darwin’s elephants managed to squeeze in just one more generation, they end up with 30 million.”

There is one other reason too…

DAP is different. DAP is not an info product
where your buyers just download an ebook or
video or whatever - and then you (the seller)
never hear from them again!

DAP is a very powerful membership software that
can be installed on your site. And for a limited
time I’m offering free installation!

So, I decided to take a page from Google’s
Gmail launch - and decided to go with a soft
launch.

Get a few folks to buy first, then they use
their affiliate link to promote to their list,
and those on *that* list use their affiliate
link to promote to *their* list, and so on…

That way, we don’t have to go crazy
trying to do a “Guru” type, massive
“Hit Everyone On The Same Day” launch.

So, without further ado, presenting to you
the work of the last 9 months of my life…

My Date With Seth Godin

Ravi and Seth - Tribes

Ok, I was being dramatic. Plus I’m straight :-) (and I think Seth is too).

Last evening, I was fortunate to be a part of a private group that participated in Seth presentation for his new book, “Tribes” .

The presentation was “remarkable!”, as Seth would’ve said himself.

Filled with extraordinary images, and almost no text, Seth walks the Garr Reynolds talk.

Came away with some terrific ideas for building and nurturing my own tribe.

Thanks Seth!

If you haven’t watched this presentation he gave at Google, it’s a must-see.
