DigitalAccessPass.com’s 1st Birthday

by Ravi Jayagopal on 10/12/2009

1 year ago, I launched a membership plugin for WordPress, called DigitalAccessPass (DAP).

It had some ground-breaking features – many firsts for its niche. Like “Content Dripping”, for example (I even coined a new word: ContentResponder :-) .

Yesterday (October 11, 2009), DAP celebrated it’s 1st birthday!

Just some proof that with a lot of focus, hard work, persistence, passion, great customer service and a little bit of smarts, it is possible to create something a lot bigger than what was in your dreams :-)

What Would Microsoft Do?

by Ravi Jayagopal on 9/24/2009

Here’s something I completely forgot to add to my earlier post about “What Would – - – - Do?“…

Yes, I do occasionally think “What Would Microsoft Do?“.

And then of course, I do EXACTLY the OPPOSITE – especially when it comes to the quality of their products, their marketing, and their branding (or lack thereof).

So here’s yet another brilliant piece of marketing from Microsoft.

It really makes you cringe – and makes you wonder, is this the best they can come up with in spite of having all that money?

And here’s a parody of the ad….

What Would – - – - – Do?

by Ravi Jayagopal on 9/21/2009

I believe it is critically important to have role models, teachers, mentors, gurus, leaders, spiritual guides – from whom we can draw courage, inspiration, enlightenment, guidance – in times of need at various stages of our life.

So here’s a short list of my role models, who have all tremendously inspired me, taught me, and given me courage in difficult/tough/desperate/sad/challenging times.

Times when I ask myself…

What would Nick Vujicic do?

What would Seth Godin do?

What would Steve Jobs do?

And of course, I never stop thinking this….

What would my beloved Father do? (And what is he doing now?)

The Power Of A Brand (Revisited)

by Ravi Jayagopal on 9/9/2009

Did you know that the incredibly famous Nike “Swoosh” logo was created by a graphic design student desperate to pay for a dress for an upcoming party, for a stunning total of $35 (at $2/hour)?

I watched a Nike documentary recently, where they interviewed  Philip Knight (one of Nike’s Founders), “His Airness” Michael Jordan, and the legendary designer of all (or most?) Air-Jordan shoes.

Knight talks about how when he first met the folks at Wieden+Kennedy (the media company that helped launch Nike as an international brand, with mainly remarkable marketing), he told them that he didn’t believe in advertising!

There is a clip at the end where LeBron James, one of the highest paid basketball players in the world today, says he grew up watching Michael Jordan, and how he and every single kid he knew felt that if they wore the same “Air Jordan” Shoes that they saw Jordan wearing in the commercials, they too could “soar in the air” and make all sorts of magical moves on the court – Just Like Mike.

Did the kids know deep, deep, deep inside that just wearing a specific brand of shoes won’t make you a better player? Of course, they all did.

But did they still convince themselves (and their parents) against reason and common-sense, that the shoes were really what counted? Of course, they all did!

How much did the association with Michael Jordan help Nike become the sports-wear-juggernaut that it is? Probably a LOT.

That just proves one thing: When you have a really strong brand (remarkable shoes, remarkable computers, remarkable prices, remarkable advice), people are much more likely to  buy your products – AND your recommendations – without thinking too much.

My hero Seth Godin recently recommended a book called “Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions“. All he wrote was, (paraphrasing) “It’s remarkable, just go buy it”.

Had never heard of the author. Didn’t read any reviews. Didn’t care about the price.

I just went and bought it  – just because Seth Godin thought it was good (yes, he has worked hard to build that level of trust, and I’m sure he knows better than to dilute it by recommending purely in return for money (say, commercial endorsements?).

If you read only one book this year, then make sure it is this one.

“Simple” and “Easy”

by Ravi Jayagopal on 6/4/2009

The difference is pretty simple, actually :-)

Quit Smoking
Simple: We all know the health benefits of not smoking. Quit smoking, live longer.
But Not Easy: The actual act of quitting is really hard.

Losing Weight
Simple: Do it and you will look good, feel good, and have more energy
But Not Easy: Working out frequently, cutting down on your favorite fatty foods, and eating healthy, is the hardest thing to do when you’re overweight.

Raving Fans
Simple: Take good care of your customers, and address their questions and concerns quickly.
But Not Easy: The amount of time and effort spent and processes you need to put in place. And sincerely caring about your customers.

Creating Something “Remarkable”
Simple: Build something that people want or need with a unique twist, go really deep in features, and address all the benefits.
But Not Easy: Think Microsoft. All the money and resources and clout in the world, yet they give us Windows ME and Vista.

Earning A Recurring Income
Simple: Build a membership site, add great content, price it well and market it well.
But Not Easy: Implementing the right membership software, creating great content consistently, doing the research and testing on pricing, implementing solid marketing.

If you just looked at what needs to be done, a lot of things in life are actually quite simple.

But the act of just doing it, doing it well, and continuing to do it well, is never ever easy.

Hope you don’t settle for the easy in life. Because nothing worth doing in life is ever easy.

Simple, may be, but never easy.

Saving Money vs. Making Money

by Ravi Jayagopal on 5/12/2009

I have a friend whose main purpose in life is to find deals and bargains and cut costs.

He once spent several weeks filling out an insane number of really long forms and processing rebate information, for a mail-in rebate promotion for a laptop. And he purchased that crappy, low-end laptop because that was the only one which had a mail-in rebate promotion available.

On top of that, he then wasted hundreds of hours in lost productivity because of the terrible performance of the low-end crappy machine which was very slow and kept crashing because it didn’t have enough memory and other resources.

He spends at least an hour a day looking at how else he can save money.

Switching his Phone, TV and Internet services from Cable Co. to Phone Co. when the former has a new customer promo. Then 6 months later, when the promo expires, switch back all of his services – Phone, TV and Internet – back from Phone Co. to Cable Co.

He is on the phone several hours a week, asking companies for discounts, looking for deals, filling out rebate forms, browsing online for deals, clipping coupons, driving tens of miles because some store somewhere is selling something for less, spending several hours during the weekend picking up used free stuff that people would rather give away (than trash them) on Craigslist.

He is the ultimate money-saving-machine. And he probably saved about $3,000 by being on top of his game.

The Flip Side

And during that same time, I have created 3 new products, tripled the size of my mailing list, wrote blog posts which brought me new paying clients and business contacts, improved several of my existing products, re-wrote and optimized multiple sales pages, launched 2 new membership sites with paying members, gave away my book for free online and still ended up selling several hundred digital copies, and made thousands in profits, and primed my business to make several tens of thousands more within the next few months. You could say roughly about $20,000 in profits in the same time frame.

$3,000 SAVING money.

- OR -

$20,000 MAKING money.

Doh!

Welcome to Techiiies.TV

by Ravi Jayagopal on 4/19/2009

I started Techiiies.tv as a fun project, and I’m pretty confident that YouTube would run out of storage space before I run out of ideas for creating techiiie videos.

Oh, and by the way, if you’re wondering about the weird spelling of Techiiies, it was of course because the name “Techies” (with the single “i”) wasn’t available :-)

And then Seth Godin published a book called “Tribes” and used the name Triiibes.com for its web site.

And I blatantly copied Seth’s idea, that is all :-)

And ended up with Techiiies.com as well as Techiiies.tv

So check out a video that I created for the site.

Or, the truth is, I launched the web site just to showcase videos that I have created ;-)

No More Amazon Commissions For Paid Traffic

by Ravi Jayagopal on 4/6/2009

Here’s the email I received earlier today, notifying me of the change to Amazon’s Affiliate Commissions policies. Relevant portion is highlighted below.

We’re writing to let you know about a change to the Amazon Associates Program. After careful review of how we are investing our advertising resources, we have made the decision to no longer pay referral fees to Associates who send users to www.amazon.com, www.amazon.ca, or www.endless.com through keyword bidding and other paid search on Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other search engines, and their extended search networks. If you’re not sure if this change affects you, please visit this page for FAQs.

As of May 1, 2009, Associates will not be paid referral fees for paid search traffic. Also, in connection with this change, as of May 1, 2009, Amazon will no longer make data feeds available to Associates for the purpose of sending users to the Amazon websites in the US or Canada via paid search.

This change applies only to the Associates programs in North America. If you are conducting paid search activities in connection with one of Amazon’s Associates Programs outside of the US and Canada, please refer to the applicable country’s Associates Program Operating Agreement for relevant terms and conditions.

We appreciate your continued support and participation in this advertising Program. If you have questions or concerns, please write to us by using the Contact Us form available on Associates Central.

Sincerely,

The Amazon Associates Program

What do you think? Does this affect you in any way?

How To Quickly & Easily Publish Business Videos

by Ravi Jayagopal on 4/2/2009

I use Amazon S3 to host my business videos.

S3 offers incredible performance, unlimited storage, and is extremely affordable. Another Purple Cow from Amazon.

Plus it looks a lot more professional than hosting your business videos on a crowded social video site with user generated videos and ads surrounding it.

  • Amazon S3 for video hosting.
  • Camtasia / Jing (both from the same folks) for screen capture.
  • S3 Fox Free FireFox plugin to upload videos to your Amazon S3 account.
  • FlowPlayer free flv player (flowplayer.org) to play the videos.

And I’m done!

Check out some videos I have hosted on S3.

Case Of The Disappearing Blog?

by Ravi Jayagopal on 3/21/2009

You probably know about my book, “No Business Like E-Business”, that sells on Amazon.

I have also developed this really powerful Membership Software, whose primary “Claim to Fame” is that it can “drip” content little by little on a list, much like an email autoresponder drips emails.

So, I had this rather brilliant idea :-) and thought to myself, why not just break-down the book into blog posts and just give them all away for free – and at the same time, give you a small taste of how powerful my membership software really is, as you see how it drips content on you “post by post”.

So each time you visit the blog, you’ll see more content available to you (which is why I call it the “disappearing blog” :-)

Two balloons with one shot (yeah, being a parent makes you move away from violence, throwing stones and hurting birds. Balloons are still ok though ;-)

So hurry up and get my favorite book for free before I change my mind… :-)

What Happens When You Get Too Good At Marketing

by Ravi Jayagopal on 3/20/2009

WARNING: SHOCKING LANGUAGE FROM CUSTOMER BELOW

Ok, so maybe the title was a little dramatic, but still, I didn’t know I was *this* awesome at marketing :-)

Over the weekend, when I thought of giving away my best-selling book on Amazon for free on the book’s blog, I never imagined that my copy writing style & marketing prowess would bring out such strong emotions in people… :-)

So, on one of the email groups that I’m a part of, I announced that they could get my book for free. And apparently, one guy wanted to just buy a digital copy right away. And when he couldn’t find a “buy” button on the blog, here’s what he wrote:

“You have no Fucking idea how to sell – you are a third world CUNT – when a prospect has already made a decision to buy you should provide the click button to buy – you have failed – because you – do not believe that you can succeed – am I right cocksucker?”

Now that is an EXACT copy-paste from his email.

Now here’s my dilemma:

I was so furious initially, that I wasted most of my day yesterday plotting revenge on this guy, and how to ruin his career and online reputation. I wrote up an entire blog post spending several hours, detailing every email exchange we had. But didn’t publish it.

See, on one side, I wasn’t sure if going ahead with my revenge saga would do me me any good at all. Too much time wasted non-productively, too much negative energy – the usual “law of attraction” stuff.

But on the other side, jerks like this can’t go on without facing any consequences, and go on like business as usual after such a racist rant.

But then peace prevailed. And I have decided to let go.

But feel free to comment below and let me know what you think.

Special Invitation: FaceBook Group

by Ravi Jayagopal on 3/11/2009

The first web page I ever designed was in 1995, for a buddy who wanted to impress his girlfriend on her birthday.

So, I ended up publishing a (what was then popular) “Java Applet” thingamajig, on a free site called Geocities (Y! bought it later). It created this rotating cube that had a different picture of hers on each side. Oh, it was so pretty! And he scored
big-time points for it, of course ;-)

Wow, makes me nostalgic… :-)

Anyway, ever since those good ol’ days, one thing I always wanted to do, was to facilitate interaction between all of my various contacts: clients, associates and friends. But just never got around to it.

Finally, I created a Facebook group for this. So here we go…

=> http://Techiiies.com/group/

Introduce yourself, your web site, and just do what you do on Facebook :-)
