A News.com article quotes Mike McGuire, research vice president at Gartner, as saying:
“Apple is genetically incapable of doing anything that smacks of me-too …”.
Wow! Isn’t that the kind of branding you want for yourself and your company?
If Apple reeks of “Me only”, then there’s another company that is the anti-thesis of Apple, which has always stood for “Me2” (me too). No points for guessing the name.
- Windows ™ (a Me2 following Apple’s own Macintosh)
- Internet Explorer (Netscape Navigator Me2)
- SQL Server (Oracle Me2)
- XBox (PS2 Me2)
- Zune (iPod Me2)
- MSN AdCenter (Google Adsense Me2)
- Windows Media Player (Real player Me2)
- MSN Messenger (AOL IM Me2)
That said, it still proves that copy-cats can be insanely successful too. You don’t have to be “original”, you don’t have to be the “first-to-market”, heck, you don’t even have to get it right (think Windows 98).
Windows ™ was probably the last of the crappy products that still sells in the millions and produces billions in sales. But don’t you bet your money on being “average”.
You can be a “Me2” company (or individual), you can do the same thing that many others were doing successfully before you even arrived, and still be successful.
Yes, you too could be like Microsoft.
Or you can be like Apple – all you have to do is simply be remarkable.
Yes, it’s easier said than done – if it weren’t, then there really would be no point in being remarkable.
